How goods are packed and loaded affects the freight rate, the damage rate and the speed of clearance. A practical look at protecting aluminium frames for sea freight.
A 40-foot container is a fixed volume, and the difference between a good freight rate and a bad one often comes down to how the goods sit inside it. Aluminium outdoor structures are bulky, mostly void, and vulnerable to movement, so how they are packed matters almost as much as the price per unit.
Aluminium is light for its size, which means a container loaded with pergola frames is usually volume-constrained rather than weight-constrained. A loaded 40-foot container of assembled pergolas can be well under the weight limit while physically full, and the freight cost per cubic metre is then being paid against empty space between the frames.
The practical way to improve this is to separate the components: ship frames flat, stack them, and pack the louvres, motors and hardware into the voids between them. It takes longer to assemble on site, but it is the difference between a profitable freight rate and one that eats the margin on the order.
Sea freight is not gentle. A container that is lifted by a spreader, dropped on a chassis and then exposed to a month of condensation will find any weakness in the packing.
Heavy items go low and forward. The front of a container carries the highest axle load, and a container that is back-heavy is both harder to secure and more likely to be refused on arrival. We prepare a loading plan with each shipment and send photographs of the loaded container before it is sealed, so the distributor can see the same thing we are shipping.
Commercial invoice, packing list, and the documentation your destination country actually needs. We are set up to supply CE documentation and RoHS declarations for European destinations and the usual certificates of origin and packing declarations elsewhere. Tell us the destination early, because some of this is a lead-time item rather than a paperwork item.
If you are comparing freight quotes on an aluminium structure order, send us the packing proposal with the quote. It is worth comparing the cost per delivered unit rather than the cost per container.
